What is the role of a Course Coordinator?
As Course Coordinator, you plan and prepare an in-depth, progressive curriculum on your topic, recommend qualified subject-matter experts as additional instructors, coordinate materials preparation, and communicate with the SLIG Director as needed. It’s a meaningful contribution of your time and professional expertise.
How is a course structured?
The traditional SLIG course includes 20 teaching sessions. You can structure these however works best — for example, two sessions a day over ten weeks, four sessions a day over five weeks, or another configuration agreed upon with the SLIG Director.
How much time does the role require?
More than most people expect. Between outlining the curriculum, recruiting and coordinating faculty, reviewing syllabus materials, and helping market the course, the coordinator role adds up to many more hours than it might seem at first glance. Reviewing and coordinating all of this information is a substantial undertaking, so it’s worth planning for a real time commitment.
Do I need to teach the entire course myself?
No — and it’s not recommended. The best courses include several instructors, so part of your role is identifying qualified faculty to teach alongside you.
What am I responsible for once I have my faculty in place?
You’ll coordinate all communication between your instructors. Each instructor is responsible for crafting their own sessions, including writing their session descriptions and syllabus materials.
What information do instructors need to submit to SLIG?
All faculty must submit bios, headshots, and full contact information. SLIG will provide a simple link for uploading this information.
Am I involved in marketing the course?
Yes. Part of your compensation is tied to student headcount, so marketing is an important part of the role. SLIG will help, but you know your audience best. Consider targeting relevant Special Interest Groups, using social media, and finding creative ways to spread the word.
What’s my role in reviewing syllabus materials?
Once instructors submit their syllabus materials, you’ll have a two-week window to review them and suggest edits before they’re sent to SLIG’s graphic designer.
Is there help for new coordinators?
Yes. Please reach out to the SLIG Director to be connected with a more experienced coordinator who can walk you through your responsibilities.
